The Administration of Departments is done by Heads appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. Such Heads are responsible to the Vice-Chancellor working always through the Deans of the various Faculties. Supervision, guidance and direction of academic activities of teaching, research and service to the community rest on the shoulders of the Head of Department. In University of Calabar, this position is rotatory at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor which there are committees of the Department which include those of Admission, examinations, screening, graduate programmes etc. All these Committees are headed by the Head of Department where the Head of Department is not a professor, the position is an acting one held on an annual basis. A professor head of Department holds the position on a substantive basis of a-two-year term.
