The university Research activities had, since inception, been co-ordinated by the Senate
Research Grants Committee and sub Committee of Deans.
This Committee is headed by a member of the committee of Deans.
There are presently difficulties in providing accurate statistics and detailed information on the
various levels and status of research activities in the University, aside from those which are
University sponsored.
These lapses would certainly be a thing of the past as soon as the Centre for Research
Coordination and Documentation proposed by the University Senate receives the approval of Management
and becomes functional. The main function of the Centre would, amongst others, be to provide easy
access to information on all research work carried out in the University as well as research grants
prospects world-wide.
From a cursory assessment, it would appear that the level of research activities in our University
would receive a boost given the favourable political perception of Nigeria’s governance by developed
nations with whom Nigeria has bilateral agreements. One notable example is the recent (July 17,
2003) visit by officials of USAID to the Institute of Oceanography to discuss the modalities
for a 5-year funding of research activities of the institute (estimated at 1 million US dollars).
This indeed is the only academic institution in the entire country selected for such research
funding.
However, following manifested difficulties in providing accurate statistics and detailed
information on various levels and status of research activities the university has recently
established a university Centre for Research Coordination and Documentation. This centre is
headed by a Professor. Such lapses as regards accurate records among others would be corrected
in this new dispensation as soon as the centre receives the funding and other facilities for full
operation. One of the centre’s main function would be to provide easy access to information on
all research work carried out in the university, both completed and ongoing in a virtual
Library arrangement. The centre would be well equipped with computers and Internet services.
