Professor of Animal Science

Vice-Chancellor

Professor Bassey Okon Asuquo, the present Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar was born about sixty-four years ago in Akim Qua Town, Calabar Municipality.  He is married with four children. He is a devout Christian, an erudite scholar and a seasoned administrator who has successfully managed the affairs of the University of Calabar for nearly five years.

Professor Asuquo was employed as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science, University of Calabar in 1983.  A year after, he obtained a Ph.D in Animal Breeding and Nutrition from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.  Before becoming the Vice-Chancellor in 2006, he had held many important positions in the University. Some of these include: Headship of Department of Animal Science, Dean, Students’ Affairs, and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management.

His membership of Professional Bodies include: Poultry Science Association, USA, African Academy of Science, Nigerian Society of Animal Production, Agricultural Society of Nigeria, Genetic Society of Nigeria, Animal Science Association of Nigeria and the Research Board of Advisors, American Biographical Institute, among others.

He has made a significant difference in the University of Calabar by the many innovations he has introduced.  For instance, every graduate now goes for Youth Service with his or her certificate.  Under his administration, the University of Calabar has raised the expertise and proficiency of staff by the many Linkages it has made with Universities in and outside Nigeria.

The University of Calabar, through the effort of Professor Asuquo, has won two Centres of Excellence Awards in Oceanography (ETF) and Tropical Diseases (World Bank Step-B).  The infrastructure in the University of Calabar has been very much improved by the Administration of this dynamic Vice-Chancellor.  This is seen in the many projects that were commissioned at the last Convocation ceremony in April, 2010:  New Administrative Complex, Clinical Laboratory for College of Medical Sciences, Permanent ICT Centre, Graduate School Complex, Computer Laboratory for Centre for General Studies, New Five Hundred Capacity Auditorium, CES Pavilion, Entrepreneurship Centre, Medical Centre Extension, Diagnostic Laboratory for Scientific Research and PTDF Chemistry Analytical Laboratory.

To address the communication needs of the 21st Century, Professor Asuquo using both the AfriHUB Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre and the NUC Data-base

project has not only encouraged the training of staff and students in this technology but has also uploaded data on all while enriching the University of Calabar Website thus projecting University of Calabar into the digital age.

In line with his interest in the welfare of staff and students, he has helped the University of Calabar Women Association to establish a Creche where both staff and students may keep their babies during the day before they are transferred to the University Staff School for primary education.

The Vice-Chancellor, a National Patron of Boys’ Brigade, has won many Awards of Excellence. These include: Leadership Distinction Award of Nigerian Organization for Youths Advancement (NOYA) – South-South Zone, Nigeria, 2002;  Award of Honour by Students’ Union Government, Unical; Africaweek Lifetime Achievement Gold Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence in Nigeria – 2008; Accolade Communication Limited – African Leader Par Excellence Award – 2008; Time News – 2007 Leadership in Nigeria Education Merit Award – 2007; International Institute of Comparative Leadership for African’s and Blacks in Diaspora–African ICON of our Generation Award – 2008; United States Dept. of State International Visitor’s Leadership Program Certificate of Participation – 2007; Zik International Knowledge Memorial Merit Award -2009; Rotary International Distinguished Service Award -2010, to mention a few.
